Powdered Glaze Preparation
Begin by adding water to the mixing vessel in the following in the following ratio’s. Note that the percentage quoted is the percentage of water required per dry weight of glaze.
Lead Free Glaze:
Spraying 50%
Dipping 60%
Dipping porous biscuit 75%
Lead Containing Glazes:
Spraying 45%
Dipping 50%
Dipping porous biscuit 65%
These ratio’s are for guidance only. More or less water may be used to achieve the preferred consistency.
Place vessel under mixer or power drill and slowly add glaze powder to the water while mixing.
Wear a dust mask and gloves for personal protection.
Mix until powder is thoroughly dispersed checking that lumps of powder have not adhered to the sides or bottom of the mixing vessel.
If required add glaze binder and or calcium chloride to thicken the glaze at this point.
Sieve glaze through a suitable sieve mesh. Sizes of 80’s, 100’s or 120’s are recommended.
Note reactive glaze should be sieved through a 40’s or 60’s mesh sieve, as the reactive material in the glaze may be removed by the finer mesh sieves.
Store in a clean dry environment.
Solids will settle over time leaving a film of water on top of the glaze. The glaze should therefore be mixed before each individual use ensuring there is no sediment on the bottom or sides of the storage vessel before using.
